The Walking Dead Season 5 Midseason Premiere Review and Analysis

Episode 9 of AMC’s television zombie series mid-season premiere kept no one waiting. Off and running from the very beginning minutes of the show it had became clear to the group that staying in their location was going to yield absolutely nothing. Rick makes the call drive to Richmond, VA for Beth’s sake. Beth and Noah had originally come up with a plan to check out his parents house in Richmond. With the belief that his family was protected by large gates, they drive the 250 miles to Richmond only to find a ravaged cage.

At the gate, Glenn peers over the 10 foot gate. Everyone looking up at his gaze and facial expression, Noah looking onward for up. All he gets is broken hopes. Noah, unwilling to comprehend the facial expressions of Glenn, climbs the 10 foot gate with everyone in toe. He runs down the street trying to gain access to his childhood home only to stop in pure emotional pain. With Tyreese the only individual that continues to tear away at his own feelings, tries to console Noah. With everything on the line, Noah must physically see the death of his loved ones. I mean, who could stop him? You want to know if truly your family has been ravaged.

Noah takes off down the street with Tyreese in quick pursuit. Everyone is trying to get answers and supplies but Noah salvation. Noah finally stops as he reaches the far end of a donut shaped neighborhood right in front of a house. Tyreese not wanting to allow Noah to go in pleads with him. Tyreese understanding no is just not an option, tells Noah that he will enter first. Opening the broken glass front door, the anticipation that something occurred here was looming over viewers. Before Noah, on the other side of the couch that blocked him, was his mother lying with her skull gashed open. His worst fears had come to light and as Noah slowly places a covering over her mother, Tyreese checks the rest of the house. In the room, he locates pictures of Noah’s twin brothers. Reminiscing over his own past transgressions, not aware of what looms next to him, gets bitten by an unknown walker on him arm. Able to fight him off, he is left by Noah (going to seek help) to fight the demons that he experienced.

Coming back in and out of frame, the governor, the girls, Bob, Beth, and others explain that its easier to just give in. The viewers hearts continually jump out and back in hoping for Tyreese to survive the mortality that faces him. Minutes go by and the group fights walkers to finally come to aide. Lying in the childs room within Noahs house, Michonne cuts the arm off while Rick and all hold him down. Is it too late? We all hold our breathes as Michonne, Glenn, Rick, and Noah lift the broken man and rush him all the way back to their car. Fighting through walkers and every second slowly ticking away. Time slows down and the viewers can completely here their hearts beating… the group drives down the street, miles after miles as Tyreese fights the demons that appeal his longing to give up. In the midst of the driving, surrounded by those that have been for him but passed, Tyreese takes his last breathe.

From a back ended view of the car driving down the road, we see the car come to a slow stop. Everyone exiting the vehicle hands on their heads as they slowly pay their last respects for such a strong individual. The pain Tyreese had longed to release and be gone had finally come to fruition… but not without a fight.

Analysis

Throughout the episode, it became very apparent that something was going to happen to Tyreese. Too much of the show had been spotlit onto him. He was given lines that made one remiss and deeply think about the tough lives we all live. Experiences that would break even the biggest and toughest teddy bear, can bounce back knowing that it isn’t the end, there is much more to continue fighting for. This planet contains many people that feel like the only way out is to give up. To wash out, as to say. A very strong quote that comes from Rocky is,

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place, and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!” ~ Rocky

We see this continued hope that goes all the way back to Dale. This inability to believe that things can get better. If this can fight for so long to die out, then it is clear that the world we sometimes lose in our lives, is never lost.

Something to think about…

AMC The Walking Dead – Spoilers and Synopsis

As you all are waiting in anticipation for the walking dead to return, AMC’s writers have been bringing to light certain spoilers and topics of discussion, although intriguing, alludes to the assumption that the show might be coming closer to the end than thought… possibly.

Here is what we know thus far:

Synopsis:

Daryl, Rick and the rest of the group were last found in season 4 captured after meandering into Terminus, thinking that all was fair in love and war. One of the big “light bulbs” that went off in Rick’s head was that, “really no one can be trusted.”

Now, in season 5, the group is together. We know that they will leave terminus while they leave a wake of death in the process. But there will be a cost… who? We don’t know. But thoughts have surfaced that Glenn was the man to go. But many have now thrown that out. We have a savage that won’t give up and we know that the leader will continue to ‘stalk’ the prey. What does that ultimately mean? Will he inevitably start taking out characters one by one?

The groups identity is in question. They haven’t been able to settle down and really grow. In many instances, this could be a very bad reference, in some small cases like the Jews in the desert lost. Unable to really call something theirs or really to start over again. Simply, they are lost and we are looking for this identity once again.

Side Note:

His anger has built, he has removed himself from the recent past, and along with others sick and tired of running into ruthless groups that have already gone over the deepened. Pretty much every group that they have come into contact with has ‘zero’ care for life.

Recently, Daryl’s sexuality has come into question. Robert Kirkman confirmed a month ago that his sexuality had been a topic of discussion, and whether they go forward with that might make for another massive blow. Kirkman is known for breaking hearts. This man is testing the water in almost every conceivable way, trying to take the viewers through a life that no one wants. The great thing about this type of show is that everything is up for grabs, there should be no main character and no set of rules to go by. Kirkman is exploring these waters and showing that shows can be just as dynamic as life. Although viewers want certain endings and certain characters to survive, creating a post-apocalyptic walking dead tv show, ultimately says, that all goes out the window.

Lastly, Kirkman and others have creating a world in which people hold their breaths to find out what’s going to happen next. With 30 million viewers and individuals that love the show, it’s more likely than not, he knows what he is doing. Although people want certain things, they should know that anything is possible and death is at the front door with a pic ax in hand.

The one thing I ask from the AMC executives is let Robert Kirkman and those closely around him do their thing. Just allow the flood gates to open and watch what happens.
